My camera battery died and then I couldn’t find a reliable power source. I met a few survivors and they told me the hospital was still fully functional. It was.

But so were the dead.

The crazy thing about the hospitals, though, is that right before the outbreak became widespread, they created something that they thought would be a cure or vaccine for the virus. While it wasn’t a cure, it did make it so that when the zombie woke up, his or her predatory and preying instincts weren’t as active. In all honesty, though, these zombies are the creepiest. It’s not safe to walk among them, but they don’t come running like the rest of them do. They do, however, stare at movement.

Believe it or not, I’m hunkered down in the morgue right now. The zombies move around in the freezer boxes sometimes, but I made sure they were locked tight. I took this picture of the nurse from behind a window. She’s been staring at me for three days now.

The creepiest part is that every time I fall asleep and stop moving, she bangs on the glass to wake me up.

Am I her entertainment?

I know, I know, I’m getting too close to them. Either...

I know, I know, I’m getting too close to them. Either I’m getting braver or just becoming disillusioned with the fear. Or maybe I’m slowly becoming suicidal. Anyway, these guys are the worst.

The smiling ones.

I know it’s a motor reflex, and I’m sure it has to do with weird hormone imbalances… but the way they instinctively smile when they smell uninfected flesh sends chills. Yeah, I know, they lack cognitive thought.

But when they smile, it really reminds you that they were people once.

You wonder what made them smile before they were infected. Love? Their kids? A new videogame? A good grade? But that doesn’t matter. Their differences, their uniqueness… it doesn’t matter. Because when they attack, you shoot. You shoot them to stay uninfected. But my uniqueness doesn’t matter anymore either. There’s only one way to pull a trigger.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more..."

““It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.””

- Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

For some reason, I can’t see myself being too upset from...

For some reason, I can’t see myself being too upset from getting eaten by these two. I shot them anyway. I guess I got too close to take the picture… they turned on me pretty quickly. I know I’m getting too risky with taking pictures, but I think it’s necessary. I got some information from their pockets.

The one on the left’s name was Piotr Belikov. He had a Russian passport but an American driver’s license. It’s a shame he couldn’t amble about with his own people.

The guy on the right’s pocket was much more telling.

His name was Ariel Cohen. He didn’t have a passport or anything but an American ID, but I’m guessing he was Israeli by the name and looks. He had a couple of pens and a condom in his pocket. The saddest, though, was the note I found. It was written in kind of a scrawly way, so I’m guessing it was a girl.

“I couldn’t shoot you, so I shot myself. If you can ever get back to normal, I’m sorry.”

If there ever is a cure, maybe it’s better I shot him. That’s what I have to tell myself.
